Woman Files FELA Suit For Late Husband

February 23, 2006

A Federal Employers' Liability Act claim against Illinois Central Railroad has recently been filed on behalf of a Florida woman's deceased husband.

The deleterious materials he was exposed to while working for ICR caused Luke Bridges' death. He died after a long battle with occupational lung diseases including, lung cancer, cardio pulmonary diseases, asbestosis and other serious respiratory diseases.

Cynthia Bridges claims that her husband was exposed to asbestos fibers, free silica, diesel fumes, solvent fumes, gasoline fumes, fibrogenic and carcinogenic materials during his career with the railroad.

ICR failed to adequately warn her husband about the risks that there were in working for ICR. According to Mrs. Bridges, they were negligent by failing to issue, circulate, and enforce safety rules regarding avoiding asbestos exposure.

According to Mrs. Bridges, ICR failed to:

  • Use ordinary care to provide a safe place to work
  • Supply safe work methods
  • Supply safe equipment
  • Supply sufficient help
  • Use care and caution under the circumstances

Before his death, Mrs. Bridges says that her husband suffered a tremendous amount of physical as well as emotional pain. He suffered from a great deal of anxiety and tension including fear of imminent death. Also, the family suffered financial losses from spending large amounts of money on medical care and treatment.

Cynthia Bridges is now seeking damages in excess of $50,000.
